Police have arrested a Turkish journalist for insulting the Holy Quran.

Hakan Aygun, who used to lead the anti-Erdogan television channel Halk TV, was detained by police in the southwestern province of Mugla, local media reported on Friday.

His arrest came at the order of prosecutor of the city of Milas after a complaint was filed against him in a court in the city, Turkeyalaan website reported.

Aygun is accused of undermining social cohesion in fighting the coronavirus pandemic and insulting Islam’s Holy Book in a series of Twitter posts.

He has incited hatred with the posts that belittled President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s campaign to raise funds for victims of the coronavirus outbreak, according to the indictment.
