Three military sources and a security source told Reuters that about 70 Nigerian soldiers were killed in an ambush by terrorists in the northeastern state of Borno.

The sources said that the attackers used rocket-propelled grenades and other heavy weapons in the attack in the village of Jurji, and the injured soldiers were transferred to Maiduguri, the state capital.

Military spokesman Saghir Musa confirmed the attack, but disagreed with estimates of the number of soldiers killed and declined to provide further information.

The identity of the attackers was not immediately clear, but Boko Haram terrorist group and ISIS are operating in the area.
