The Afghan government has announced that it has detained up to 700 ISIS terrorist fighters and their families in the east of the country over the past six months.

The Afghan Security Directorate (Intelligence) said that among the detainees were at least 75 women and 159 children, most of whom were foreigners.

Most of those detained in these campaigns are from Pakistan and Central Asian countries, according to an official from the Security Directorate, who asked to remain anonymous.

The Afghan official added that among the arrested militants, 277 were foreigners.

In a tweet on Twitter, Washington’s envoy for peace, Zalmay Khalilzad, wrote earlier this month that ISIS in eastern Afghanistan had been weakened by operations by US and Afghan forces, and the Taliban as well.
