The Imam Shirazi World Foundation issued a statement on the International Day of Non-Violence, calling for adopting a culture of nonviolence and peace as a principle in dealing with crises and facing problems.

“The International Day of Non-Violence is celebrated on 2 October each year, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of India’s independence movement and pioneer of nonviolence philosophy and strategy, as an occasion to spread the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness given the importance of this principle and the desire to secure a culture of peace, tolerance and understanding.

The statement added that “many great people have exerted efforts throughout the recent history in the consolidation and spread of this human principle, especially Shia scholars, in the follow-up to the enrichment of true Islam, which God honored man at the end of his heavenly messages and religious laws.”

The statement pointed out that “the best thing to evoke on this occasion of the United Nations is one of the most prominent figures in this regard, namely the late Imam Sayyed Mohammad Husseini Shirazi, may Allah bless his soul, as has exerted his efforts and age in order to spread the principle of non-violence as a means to achieve stability and social security in various Muslim countries.

Imam Shirazi in his presentation of the principle of non-violence gathered the finest views, ideas and modern trends, perhaps even more varied in dimensions than his predecessor Mahatma Gandhi, one of the leading pioneers of this trend in the first half of the twentieth century, and perhaps exceeded the contemporaries in the specific specialized divisions of the principle of nonviolence.

In the context of the ongoing challenges to the international community, which are threatening unprecedented world peace and social security in many parts of the globe, the Imam Shirazi World Foundation presents the visions and theories of advocates of nonviolence and peace as a necessity,” the statement concluded.
