The Australian historian, Suzan Rickard, has recently written an article about practicing Ashura rituals in Sydney in 1806, noting that such rituals date back to the beginning of the European settlement in the country.

Rickard said that Sydney Gazette Newspapers covered Ashura ceremonies for a whole week in 1808, adding that Arbaeen event was widely spread at that time that many newspapers covered the grief event.

She added that Shias during Ashura sadly practice certain rituals including self-flagellation, distributing food to the poor, and holding congregational prayers to remember the battle of Karbala which took place in 680 A.D.

Rickard went on saying that Arbaeen event was commemorated by Shia sailors from Asia nearCampbell’s wharf, and they were busy in preparing for the event in 1806.
