On this day, Iraqis remember the martyrdom anniversary of the great religious authority, Grand Ayatollah Sheikh Muhammad Taqi al-Shirazi, may Allah bless his soul, who was one of the most prominent scholars of modern history and leader of the eternal Twentieth Revolution.

His fatwa, or religious edict, against the English occupation was the main pillar in launching the revolution, which prompted the scholars to gather and send messages to the tribal chiefs urging them to revolt.

The Shirazi authority also issued another fatwa against the election of the British High Commissioner, Sir Percy Cox, to be Prime Minister of Iraq, saying, “One who is a Muslim has no right to elect and choose a non-Muslim to rule over the Muslims.”

His Eminence was martyred in Karbala on the 13th of Dhu al-Hijjah, one hundred years ago, after being poisoned. His death resonated in the country and the Islamic world, and he was buried in the courtyard of Imam Hussein Holy Shrine.
