The death toll from the massive explosion that hit Beirut Port on Tuesday rose to 137, according to a new toll from the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

A spokesman for the ministry, Redha Mousawi, told France Press that this toll is not final, noting that there are still dozens of missing people.

Lebanese Health Minister Hamad Hassan announced that more than 5,000 people were wounded in the explosion in Beirut Port on Tuesday, and that about 250,000 people were left without homes suitable for housing after the shockwave smashed the facades of buildings, blew furniture in the streets and smashed windows within miles of the site.

Hassan added that dozens of people are still missing, and the death toll is expected to increase, as the rescue forces continue searching operations to recover bodies and search for the missing.

The blast was the most powerful attack on Beirut and Lebanese officials had announced that it was caused by negligence in storing about 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate at the port.
