At least eight people have been killed and dozens of others wounded as multiple blasts hit a sports stadium in eastern Afghanistan.

The near simultaneous explosions took place late Friday night during a cricket competition in the city of Jalalabad in the violence-wracked Nangarhar province, said provincial council member Sohrab Qaderi. The attack occurred on the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.

According to the official, the explosions were caused by rockets.

Khogyani further said the deputy provincial mayor of neighboring Laghman province and the tournaments chief organizer were among those killed by the blasts. Official say the casualties may rise.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani strongly condemned the attack, emphasizing that such terrorist acts during the holy month once again proved that terrorists are not true believers of any religion or faith and “are enemies of humanity.”

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Nangarhar province, which is on the border with Pakistan, has witnessed surging violence since the beginning of the year. The most recent incident took place last week when a coordinated attack on the provincial accounts office killed at least 15 people.
